World Book Day: Join us for a life-long pleasure of reading!
World Book Day is here! And we are absolutely excited to share this wonderful event with you!
Here is the perfect opportunity for kids, parents and teachers to appreciate a world of literature and a life-long pleasure of reading!
The tradition of World Book Day started in 1995, as an initiation by UNESCO to celebrate books and reading. It takes place in 100 countries, and the event is immensely popular in the UK, which aims to give every child a book of their own. This is done by distributing £1 tokens to use at book stores, and a brand-new book is given for free! Children can also use their token to get £1 off of any other book. Almost 15 million tokens are given each year, with one for nearly every child under 18 years in the country.
This is a massive effort as a nation to get children to read and love books. What’s more, the day is full of exciting incentives to promote reading for pleasure. Schools hold special planned events such as book fairs, and classrooms display literary characters with book themed lessons. The most fun part however, is the tradition of dressing up as one’s favourite book character. Some of the most beloved costumes are creations by children’s books authors such as Roald Dahl and David Walliams. Of course memorable characters from Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and other timeless fantasies make delightful costumes to eagerly wait for.
World Book Day: Here’s what we love about this wonderful event!
At superpersonalisedstories, we wholeheartedly support World Book Day as it’s a wonderful idea to show that reading is fun, relevant and accessible, with the power to transform lives. It’s an event that encourages adults to share stories with young ones, by reading together for at least 10 minutes per day. This exposes young minds to develop a strong sense of memory, vocabulary and intellect. It even helps to change perceptions and introduces children to a whole new world view.
Thus, the benefits from the day are ten-fold, and it’s encouraging even for the children who don’t like to read. Research also shows that 1 in 4 kids use their token to buy their very first book. (World Book Day Charity) Not stopping there, the event donates money to Book Aid International, which sends books to children from other countries. After all, what can be more wonderful than spreading the joy of books through a collective feeling?
We do hope you enjoy this year’s activities, and while you are at it, why not take a look at our special World Book Day offers here?
